45×365 #6: Cam T.

He was the Jeff Spicoli of our high school band, a gentle soul in a chemical-induced haze. We’d joke in class; his trombone would poke my back. But when I asked for Carmex, he solemnly responded: “No, dude … but I have some Black Cadillacs.”

first weekend in october

Moon’s going to Geek.Kon today with a bunch of her friends, and then the aforementioned friends will  behaving a non-Homecoming party. At JM & Nichole‘s game night last night, we found out that JM and his game-making buddies would be there, too. Sounds like fun.

SpiritMan is having someone over to the basement sound studio to make a meditation tape, Turbo is concentrating on Halo 3, and I want to knit. It’s supposed to be in the mid-80s today, which kind of takes the fun out of it being October, and puts a damper on my fall activities such as knitting with wool and baking pies.

45×365 #5: Joe L.

A handsome young ad salesman with a somewhat short fuse, he and I shared an office when we worked for a religious newspaper. I waved my hands and shook my head when I heard him angrily telling a priest his attitude was “not very Christian.”

Not so cooperative Scarf model

I finished this scarf a few weeks ago, but Moon wasn’t eager to model it for me. That’s why I needed a stand-in. Unfortunately, this particular scarf model doesn’t quite understand what the camera thing is all about, and requires pretzels to keep her in one place.

Also, she sheds.

45×365 #4: N.M.

We were college girls – and conservative Catholics. We caught up with each other a decade later, two moms with preschoolers and part-time jobs. Except hers was an outgrowth of an open marriage and a husband with a cuckold fetish: she was a high-end call girl.

(P.S. Her job paid better than mine.)

comments snafu

Here you are trying to be kind and give me a comment, and you’re getting a crazy error message. No worries – it’s a problem with one of the theme files, and I’ll upload a fixed copy as soon as I can get to my laptop. Rest assured, the comments are coming through, though.

[ UPDATE: Comments should be working now. Have at it! ]

45×365 #3: Raja

When given the chance to sign up for an overseas pen pal, I selected the most exotic country available: India. Raja lived in Calcutta, but his family had money. His father was an attorney; Raja used the word “advocate.” Pre-Internet, exchanging letters took time.

voluntary simplicity

Tonight, SpiritMan and I are going to a kickoff session for the Voluntary Simplicity study program at our church. We’ve joined a discussion group, which ought to be fun. Our Medicine Wheel study group last year was an interesting way to get to know other people and explore our beliefs.

This topic is a little different for me, though, because we were all over the simplicity movement around 7 years ago. I had picked up this book out of curiosity, and it was truly eye-opening. SpiritMan read it when we were on vacation and began his spiritual studies in earnest after that.

The thing is, I’ve fallen off the wagon in so many ways. We used to be debt-free, and that’s not the case anymore. My year of self-employment set us back quite a bit. Besides that, I am not the purist I was at the beginning. There’s more clutter in my life, and some of it I want to keep. I never would have guessed I could ever become so attached to TV shows. I’m eating meat again. It’s okay; I think I have more balance now.

But there’s plenty of room to grow, and I think I’ll learn a lot in the coming weeks.

i’m breathing

Turbo and I went to see a medical intuitive a little over a week ago. She had done a remote body scan on each of us, and we went to her lovely country home to go over the results in person and experience some chakra healing.

And it was rather amazing. I wasn’t sure what Turbo would think of the whole thing, but he was very open to it all. It helped that her observations were absolutely right on. She identified conditions that we already were aware of. During the healing session, Turbo fell sound asleep. Snoring and everything.

I think I got even more out of the visit. It wasn’t like she “saw” anything alarming – in fact, some of the insights she received had seemed almost not worth mentioning. But I’m glad she doesn’t edit herself, because there were things I needed to hear.

The main one being that I need to breathe. That statement set off all kinds of recognition ‘hits’ in me. I instantly remembered my massage therapist friend pointing out to me a few weeks ago that I hardly breathed. She was helping me with a stiff neck, and apparently I kept holding my breath. She told me I needed to remind myself that I deserved to take in the atmosphere. I deserve life.

So… deep breaths for me, consciously, daily. Oxygen is my friend.

My favorite high school teacher carried an afro pick in his back pocket; its handle was a Black Power fist. He made us band geeks feel like we might be cool, even though we had to march wearing those polyester uniforms and tall furry hats.

45×365 #1: Stevie

With his thick glasses and unruly blond hair, he was a perfectly cute 5-year-old. But through my kindergarten eyes, I saw him as tormenter. All because he kept tagging me with quick kisses, especially when we were seated in tidy rows awaiting storytime.

[This is my first of, hopefully, 365 daily 45-word posts about people that I have met over time. One word for each year of my life. I found out about the x365 project through Schmutzie, and thought it might jump-start my writing. Check it out – you might just want to join in.]
